Description

This course will introduce students to the training of visual memory and its history as part of a landscape painter’s practice. The importance of memory training and the ability to use memory in one’s work cannot be overstated. Memory distills and intensifies observational experience, aids in the simplification and editing process, and has a direct correlation to the artist’s emotional response to the motif- clarifying both how to paint it and why to paint it. A well trained visual memory allows the artist to observe and retain the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere, reducing the reliance on photography. The sustained observation required to train memory deepens and focus’s the artist’s relationship with Nature. Memory acts as a bridge to competent work from imagination.

Students will learn through directed exercises how to strengthen their observational and memory skills. They will learn how to incorporate memory into their own work and to continue to improve their memory skills.

How the Class Works

On Demand Classes are self directed study programs. Students work through the class content at their own speed and on their own schedule. On Demand Classes are available to be reviewed, watched and studied on a continuing basis. Access is evergreen (see FAQs for what that means).

The Class Course. The class content is delivered by written lecture, images and videos on a dedicated platform accessible only by class participants. 

  • Students retain continuing access to the course content, including videos.
  • The Materials & Reading List for your class is available within the course itself.

Cancellations

If after registration for an On Demand online class and before you have accessed the class, you advise us that you are unable to participate, you will receive a full refund, less an administrative fee of $50 plus applicable PayPal or other payment processor fees or you may transfer your registration to another class of like value. Once you have logged into the class, there are no refunds. 

If you have purchased multiple classes at the same time and received a bundled discount (Bundle), refunds are handled as follows. You will receive a refund for classes included in the Bundle but not yet started and accessed by you. The refund will be the amount you paid for the classes not taken, minus a $50 administrative fee, any applicable PayPal or other payment processor fees and the applicable discounted amount for classes already accessed.
